I’m a student learning from professionals and I would like to do some case studies and put my skills into action.

Try to join www.linkedin.com and build your portfolio. You can join relevant groups and build business relationships.

You could place an ad in your local paper offering your service… I’ve done this and you wouldn’t believe the amount of work I’ve gotten.

Or you could advertise your services on Craigslist… its a great place to find work. LInk below :)

There are some good pieces of advice above!

Let me summarize and add to this….

1) You need to get your site & offerings online
(I *strongly* recommend doing it from a self-hosted optimized wordpress blog)

2) Get eyeballs on your offer by way of:

* craigslist.com (submit 2 posts every 24-36 hours to two different cities)…ensure subject line and first & last paragraph are a bit diff and do from a phone verified account — keeping within craiglist’s TOS

* scriptlance.com – I’ve had success with pitching 2 hour consultation sessions + email/action list followup for 200+ dollars then upsell later to bigger service packages. (some other sites to hit besides scriptlance.com are elance.com, getafreelancer.com and odesk.com)

* get your site with your offerings listed on maps.google.com and local.yahoo.com

* as mentioned above do some publishing by way of:
— blog post + social bookmarking
— article submission to ezinearticles.com + socialbookmarking (minus digg.com — use others listed on socialmarker.com)
— press release + social bookmarking

* if you have a small budget, get some geo-targetted keyword phrases built and into Google Adwords

Hope this helps,
Sean

PS: I’ve been doing this full time since 1999 — it works but you have to put on your horse-blinders and focus and get your site up quickly and start posting your offers! :)
